Second-level domain names – should you or shouldn’t you?

News that the “second level” domain of .nz is being released in New Zealand at the end of the month has had several customers asking about what it all means.

One domain registrar is offering “pre-registrations” for these domain names.

In essence, it’s up to you whether you want to buy the .nz name. But anyone else registering your existing the .nz version of your existing would be “squatting”. The next step would usually be to then offer to sell the domain name back to you. Whether they would get away with this is another matter!

In reality, you could go crazy buying up several domain names, so you have to weigh up the cost of renewing every year with the possible gains.

Here is some information on the new .nz domains and how they work.
